Some of the Transport and Taxi Scams you will come across while visiting Bali unofficial private taxi drivers will
quote vastly inflated prices, in some areas the local taxi mafias block ride sharing, Then there is the broken or rigged taxi meter, hey why use a meter when you can charge more without it. Next we have scooter rental shops charging inflated hire prices or enormous fees for both real and not so real damage to the bikes.
The more of these common tricks you are aware of the safer and stress free your travels in Bali will be.
Broken Meters and Overcharging Taxi Drivers
Some marked taxi drivers who solicit Night Life and Airport areas will tell you their meter is not working and offer you Special Prices to get you in the car, these special prices can often unto five times what the meter rate would be.
The Fake Taxi Scams
The official Blue Bird taxi has the go to standard for any metered transportation around Bali, however scammers will often copy the light blue coloring or logos. possibly using almost identical words like Blue Burd, or slightly change the bird logo or sign.
Scams in Ride Hailing
In some areas that have a large local transportation taxi Mafia ” Like Ubud Padang Bai, Canggu and even Kuta the local mafia types bully and intimidate non local drivers and Grab or Gojek drivers into canceling reservations in order to ensure you have to use one of the Local mafia cars or bikes at exorbitant prices.
How to prevent the Scams.
- Whenever possible use a Trusted Driver. You will find that drivers who use paid advertising or have spent money on Face Book pages and web sites wont want to risk their reputations on get rich quick scams. When you find a driver you can trust stick with him whenever possible.
- Its not always possible, we know its not always possible to get your favorite driver. If you need to use a taxi service go with the authentic official Blue Bird Taxis and insure the use a meter or at least negotiate the price before even getting in the car.
Inspect your scooter properly. When hiring a Motor Scooter take a video to document any scratches also video mirrors dents, tires and under the seat. While driving your hire bike keep your international drivers license with you and always wear your helmet.
